Position Overview
The GIS Geographical Information System Manager is responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and management of geographic information systems (GIS) within an organization. This role involves managing GIS projects, leading teams, ensuring the effective use of GIS technology, and ensuring that spatial data is integrated with organizational processes to support decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
1. GIS System Management
Oversee the development, implementation, and maintenance of GIS systems, ensuring they meet organizational requirements.
Manage the configuration, integration, and administration of GIS software, databases, and hardware infrastructure.
Ensure GIS systems and platforms are optimized for performance, reliability, and scalability.
2. Project Leadership and Coordination
Lead GIS-related projects, ensuring timely delivery, within budget, and in line with organizational goals.
Coordinate with various departments to define project requirements, gather spatial data, and ensure GIS solutions are tailored to meet specific needs.
Provide strategic guidance and support to GIS teams, ensuring best practices in GIS development and implementation.
3. Data Management and Quality Control
Oversee the management of spatial data, ensuring it is accurate, up-to-date, and organized.
Develop data collection standards and ensure GIS data integrity and consistency across all systems.
Implement data quality control measures and procedures for GIS datasets, including verification and validation processes.
4. Reporting and Analysis
Oversee the generation of GIS reports, maps, and visualizations for internal stakeholders.
Provide GIS-based spatial analysis to support decision-making processes in areas such as urban planning, infrastructure development, environmental analysis, etc.
Assist in interpreting and presenting GIS analysis results to senior management and stakeholders.
5. Staff Management and Development
Manage a team of GIS professionals, providing leadership, training, and development opportunities.
Set clear performance goals and evaluate the performance of team members.
Foster a collaborative environment to ensure efficient teamwork and the sharing of expertise.
6. Stakeholder Communication and Support
Communicate with internal and external stakeholders to understand GIS needs and deliver effective solutions.
Provide technical support and guidance to other departments using GIS tools and data.
Develop and maintain relationships with GIS vendors, consultants, and service providers.
7. Budget and Resource Management
Develop and manage the GIS department’s budget, ensuring cost-effective use of resources.
Recommend new GIS tools or technologies that improve efficiency and effectiveness while controlling costs.
Ensure the availability of necessary hardware, software, and training resources for the GIS team.
Qualifications and Skills
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, Computer Science, Urban Planning, Engineering, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
5+ years of experience in GIS management or GIS project leadership.
Proven track record in GIS system implementation, data management, and spatial analysis.
Experience managing a team and working on multi-disciplinary projects.
Technical Skills
Expertise in GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, AutoCAD, and related tools.
Strong knowledge of spatial databases, including PostGIS, SQL Server, or Oracle Spatial.
Proficiency in GIS programming and scripting (e.g., Python, JavaScript) for automation and customization.
Experience with cloud-based GIS platforms and integrating GIS systems with enterprise resource planning (ERP) and business intelligence (BI) tools.
